Post endodontic appointment treatment advice

You can be numb from the anaesthetic for another 1-4 hours (it may vary from case to case). Please do not eat or drink anything hot during this period as you can burn yourself without realising, you can have cold drinks straight away.

Please note that due to the loss of natural tooth structure, some root filled teeth are more likely to fracture, therefore we would recommend you to be cautious when biting on hard foods until the permanent filling or crown has been placed. Once the numbness has gone you can eat on the temporary filling as early as one hour later.

Please note that there is a risk of some pain and discomfort. It is usually throbbing in the region and tenderness to chewing normally for the first 2-4 days. The following is an analgesic regime that should deal with the pain and discomfort but in some cases may speed up the healing process. Please note if you cannot take Ibuprofen because you suffer from asthma, gastrointestinal ulcers or you are taking blood thinners, please only take Paracetamol.

Analgesic regime:

If you are allowed to take Ibuprofen

Please take Ibuprofen 1 x 400mg PLUS Paracetamol 2 x 500mg at the same time.
This can be 3-4 times a day, or take as needed.

If you cannot take Ibuprofen

Please take Paracetamol (1000mg dose) 2 x 500mg 4 times a day.

Always read the labels of your medication to make sure that these analgesics do not interfere with any other medication you may be taken.

In rare occasions pain can be severe and accompanied with swelling. This can be referred to as a “flare up”. Please be assured that if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from a flare up it does not affect the overall success of the treatment. In these rare occasions antibiotics may be necessary, but we will make a judgement on this depending on your symptoms. Please contact us on 01732521123.
